Water is our source of life. Not only does it sustain human life, but all life on earth. However, water shortage is already affecting more than 40 percent of the world's population, and the problem is only expected to grow in the future. There is no doubt about it - freshwater is a precious resource that we need to protect.
Conventional cotton is one of the most used fibres in textile. It also demands the highest amount of freshwater when produced, and every year 26 million tons of cotton are harvested worldwide.
Seaweed off the coast of Iceland
That's why we have developed a new fabric called OCN WEED®. The material contains innovative seaweed fibres that safeguard the future by saving water - unlike conventional cotton, which requires extreme amounts of water when produced.
We have created a strict code of conduct to protect our precious nature. We harvest our seaweed off the coast of Iceland. We only harvest from the same area once every four years to ensure complete regrowth between harvests and preserve ecological value.
This is only the beginning
The incredible thing about seaweed is that it is a natural and regenerative resource that already exists in abundance under the sea and needs nothing more than the water it already sits in.
OCN WEED® contains 30 percent seaweed fibres (SeaCell™) and 70 percent organic cotton. This is only the beginning. We are just starting to explore the possibilities of using seaweed in textile, and we will continue to innovate and explore the material going forward.
